Courses, Training, Courses, More Training...
Being an English teacher means you’re never really “done.” Methods evolve, learners change, and let’s be honest—none of us want to teach the same lesson 300 times and call it a career. That’s where Continuing Professional Development (CPD) comes in. It’s not just about ticking boxes; it’s about staying sharp, curious, and adaptable.
CPD can look like workshops, conferences, online courses, nerdy ELT articles, or just swapping ideas with teachers who actually get it. Whatever form it takes, it’s what keeps your lessons fresh, your students engaged, and your career moving forward. And yes—track it, reflect on it, talk about it. Employers notice, and more importantly, you grow.
Here are three courses that had a major impact on my journey:
CELTA: The foundation. Lesson frameworks, classroom management, and how not to talk over your students (still working on that one).
IHCAM: Where I got experimental—action research, new strategies, and figuring out what actually works in my context.
Delta: The deep dive. Assessment, syllabus design, and the moment I truly became an independent professional (with a side of existential crisis, naturally).
These shaped who I am as a teacher—and I share them here in case you're thinking about your next step. CPD isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. So keep learning, reflect often, and share what you find. That’s how we grow—and how we make this field a little less lonely and a lot more inspiring.
Resources, Bibliographies, Books, Sites, Tools and more...
Over the years, I’ve collected a solid stash of resources that have seriously shaped how I teach—some discovered by accident, others handed to me by generous, brilliant teacher friends who said, “You need this.” And they were right.
I’m not into gatekeeping, so I’m sharing a few of the ones that have genuinely made a difference—both in and out of the classroom. Whether it’s a book that shifted my perspective, a digital tool that saved my prep time (and sanity), or a go-to site for last-minute inspiration, they’ve all earned a permanent spot in my teaching toolkit.
These aren’t magic fixes, but they’ve kept my lessons fresh, learner-focused, and (mostly) functional. Got something you swear by? Send it my way. Sharing what works is one of the easiest ways we can keep evolving without burning out.
